Introduction to a Different Kind of Engineer

                                                                  (awkward waving)

This is a pretty accurate depiction of me trying to not be awkward yet still being awkward!

First things first though! My name is Mariah Butler. I am from a super small town in Southeast Oklahoma and defying all odds by going to college. I am the middle child of 5 (fun fact: 4 of us are redheads!) I’ll let you imagine how fun that was growing up...
                                                                            (Giphy)

I currently live with my boyfriend where we are raising a 3 year old cat, Lois, and a bamboo plant, Mr. Bamboo!

In school I'm studying Industrial and Systems Engineering. I honestly picked this major because it was the result of the ASVAB test I had to take in high school. Thankfully it worked out great!

It took me 2 years to realize that I had to pay attention and put forth more effort in school instead of living off the mindset that “C’s get degrees”. For that reason I haven’t really “liked” many of my classes outside of the really interactive ones. However, last semester I took a class called Data Driven Decision Making that I really liked. Sounds super boring I know, but I like numbers and I knew it would be beneficial for me to learn for when I got into the “real world” so I enjoyed taking that class. Also, when it was over I was one semester closer to finally graduating! To me that is a big accomplishment because I feel like I’ve been in college forever! (by the way I’m a fifth year senior)

Other than wrecking my car and spending $2,500 to get it fixed my Christmas break was pretty uneventful. I did learn a lot about cars, especially how important it is to not slam on your breaks when you are sliding on ice about to hit a curb...

Oh ya I did go to Rhema too! It's the biggest Christmas lights festival in Oklahoma, it's located in Tulsa, and it is absolutely amazing! If you ever get a chance to go you should. Here’s a picture I took of it:
(Rhema)

I am excited break is over though because some of my favorite shows to watch are coming back on air! They are mostly superhero shows: The Flash, Arrow, Gotham, Legends of Tomorrow. I also really like Westworld, Modern Family, and Don’t trust the B in apt 23.

Other than keeping up with my tv shows I am currently learning to play piano and that's pretty fun. My favorite song I've learned so far is the theme song to Jaws!

but mostly my hobbies are playing sports like basketball or softball fun fact I actually came to OU for the Rowing team!

  1. Redheads are the best kind! My hair use to be red too when I was younger but as I got older it turned a light brown. I enjoy the pictures you chose to add on this blog post. We got to see Lois but what about Mr. Bamboo? Hopefully he will get a feature on your blog before this class is over.

    1. Ya from what I hear that happens more often than you think to redheads. Thank you! I'll have to add Mr. Bamboo in sometime soon!

  2. You don't sound that awkward to me, but I spend most of my time with engineers so maybe that's the reason. I like all the work you put into your introduction. Your choice of pictures eludes to a vision of your personality and you seem to be a very interesting person. I guess that means if you are award then so am I. You came here for the rowing team? You are not the first I’ve hear say this. I am pleased to make your acquaintance.

  3. How cool that you are learning to play piano, Mariah! That is something I would really like to do someday too. Being able to play the theme song to Jaws sounds like fun! There is a YouTube channel by an Indian musician, Tushar Lall, who does Indian-flavored versions of movie and TV theme songs which you might enjoy; I'll be sharing some of them in class like the Harry Potter one: Indian Jam: Harry Potter (since there are a lot of people in these classes who are into Harry Potter).

Also, I am glad to say that there is a god of engineers in India: Vishwakarma, the All-Maker. You can find out more about him here if you are curious: Vishwakarma. Every profession should have some divine protection I think! I consider Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, to be on the side of teachers. :-)

    1. I have never heard of him, but that sounds cool. I'll definitely look into that, and I love Harry Potter so I'm sure I'll love those versions! Vishwakrma sounds like a promising person to look into as well. I would never have guessed there was a god of engineers in India. Thank you for your feedback!

  4. Very nice to meet you! I am also a redhead, but not so much anymore as I have been having my hair colored blonder for a while now. I loved that you included a picture of you cat, he is so cute! I am also a cat person, I have two at home named Hershey and Skittle. You'll have to keep me updated about your bamboo plant because I cannot keep plants alive to save my life! Modern Family is one of my favorite TV shows too!

  5. Hey Mariah! Nice to meet you! I love the little videos you added in there! They are so much fun. I am from a super small town too so I know what it is like! I can’t imagine having that large of a family thought! I bet there was never a dull moment! I loved that you mentioned the bamboo plant haha that made me laugh! Good luck with everything!

  6. Nice to meet you! Your cat is really cute and it is funny that you named your bamboo plant! I bet engineering is really hard. Do you know when you will graduate yet? I like that you incorporated gifs into your blog because it makes it really fun and interesting. I look forward to reading some of your stories this semester!!

  7. Hi, Mariah! First off, I love that first gif. I was dying laughing when I saw it and when I saw your first sentence about it. I am the EXACT same way so I understand that awkward pain. Anyway, I’m glad you are doing something you like (engineering is definitely not for me), and I’m horrified that you wrecked your car! But yeah, no. Lesson Learned: Ice is not fun, and brakes are not a friend of ice.

  8. Hey Mariah! Nice to meet you, I like that you added some gifs in your introduction! I am studying engineering also so I feel your pain. Super cool that you are starting to pick up piano, I have always wanted to play an instrument but have not had the time. Your cat reminds me of my childhood cat, they look identical. Nice to meet you!

  9. Hi Mariah! Nice to meet you! Your cat is so cute! I saw that you are studying Industrial and Systems Engineering. What year are you in college? I am studying aerospace engineering so I always have classes in Carson. I am sorry to hear that you wrecked your car over Winter Break and had to pay money to get it fixed.  I live in Tulsa so I am very familiar with Rhema. I wish you the best of luck this semester!

  10. Firstly, I'd like to say that I love your gif. I can definitely relate to the awkwardness. I've actually had several of those moments on campus walking down the south oval. Secondly, I'm the "middle" child of four. I understand what it's like to have a large family. I have all sisters. What about you? Furthermore, I love the picture of the Christmas lights. Christmas is my favorite holiday and time of the year. I just love the joy, warmth, and unity that comes along with this season. Going to look at Christmas lights is one of my favorite things to do. I would love to try and attend Rhema this year.

  11. Hi Mariah, nice to meet you. I am from a small town in South West Oklahoma so I kind of understand where you are coming from. That is awesome you are on the rowing team. I have heard that it requires a good amount of dedication to stick with. Sorry to hear about your car, but at least you are OK. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  12. Mariah, I love the show Community (which is where your first GIF is from). I am a redhead too but I am an only child! I can't image 4 redhead tempers in one house. One is enough in my house (haha). I have a cat at home too! Don't worry, I like numbers too for some reason. I've always been really good at math (even though I don't particularly enjoy it all that much). That's awful what happened to your car! I can't even imagine. I just recently purchased my mom's car from her because mine was officially 15 years old and I didn't trust it to take me from Edmond to Norman everyday to school anymore. Thanks for sharing!

  13. Hi Mariah!
Nice to meet you! I definitely was fascinated by some of the facts about you and your life, especially the growing up with 4 redheads WOW! It's always amazing to hear about people and how they come across their life careers, and I'm glad to see the ASVAB helped you with that! The rowing team seems like a lot of fun. I actually know someone on the rowing team -- Monica Stevenson. She used to go to high school with me. Thank you for sharing!

  14. Hi Hannah! It is nice to meet you! I have a three year old cat too. Her name is Mya and she is the best. I too had to push past the mindset of C's get degrees. It was not easy but it had made me a better student and I learned much more after applying myself. Good luck this semester!

  15. I’ve lived in Oklahoma for thirteen years now, in a family that really digs Christmas lights, and somehow this is the first I’ve ever heard of Rhema. It looks amazing. Thanks for the recommendation! Also, the fact that you’re on OU’s rowing team is so cool. I’d never actually seen rowing go down till I went to my cousin’s meet last month in Austin, and I was honestly surprised at how interesting it was to watch, since I don’t normally like sports. And at how difficult it all looked. Good luck with the rest of the season, and the semester!

  16. Hey Mariah! I’m not sure if you remember me or not, but I was actually in ASK with you last year. I’ve since gone alum, but it’s really funny that we ended up taking this class together. Anyways, I’m really excited to get to read some what you’ve written for this class so far! Looking forward to your stories! Hope to hear from you soon!

  17. Hey Mariah! Its so nice to meet you! I really enjoyed all of the gifs you put in your introduction! It is so great that you love superhero shows! I am a huge fan of flash and Arrow! You should check out the show Powerless, it's a fun parody on the traditional superhero show! I really hope to see your love of superheros come through in your writing! I hope you have a good rest of your year and I can't wait to read your stories!
